Program Description:

The Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership is a program framed around questions of equity, ethics, and social justice to bring about solutions to complex problems of practice. The program is designed to prepare educational leaders with the knowledge base and skills to lead reform efforts that result in improved student outcomes and educational transformation, particularly for our Inland Empire region.

This 3-year cohort-based program meets the needs of full-time professionals in the field of education, either PreK-12 or Community College/Higher Education careers. Courses are conveniently offered on weekends, Friday 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Students attend every other weekend in Fall and Spring semesters, and every weekend during the summer semester. Students from the Coachella Valley can attend Friday sessions through streaming (Zoom) from the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus; all other students are expected to attend in-person at the CSUSB San Bernardino Campus. Students are encouraged to identify a field-based problem of practice for their dissertation research.

• Future Directions Essay (2-3 pages)
• Scholarly writing sample
• GRE score *The GRE requirement is waived for the Fall 2022 application cycle
• Prior college transcripts (unofficial accepted)
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
• A master’s degree from an accredited college or university
• Three confidential Recommendation Evaluations (in CSU Apply) from professionals in the field attesting to leadership and scholarship.

The recruitment and admissions committee will oversee the specific admissions processes for the program, review candidate applications, and make admissions decisions. The graduate admissions standards of the university shall apply to all Ed.D. candidates.

The Ed.D. program requires the following of applicants for admission to the doctoral program:

1. A completed CSU Apply application;
2. An earned baccalaureate degree and master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher in upper-division and graduate study combined;
3. Official transcripts from each college or university attended since high school graduation (no exceptions);
4. Submission of Graduate Record Examination* (GRE) scores from three sections of the General Test taken within the last five years (*waived for Fall 2022);
5. Three confidential Recommendation Evaluations (in CSU Apply) from professionals in the field attesting to leadership and scholarship. One evaluation should be from a university faculty member (if possible) addressing your potential for academic success in a doctoral program, which can be detailed in the Evaluator Comments section. Evaluation responses are not required for application submission, but will need to be received prior to deadline for full consideration. 6. A written future directions essay (2-3 pages) addressing the challenges related to education in California, make recommendations for change, and note your potential leadership involvement in the process;
7. A scholarly writing sample such as a master's thesis chapter or a report or grant you have written in your profession;
8. Sufficient preparation and experience to benefit from the program;
9. Demonstrated educational leadership potential and skills including successful experience in school, postsecondary, community, and/or policy leadership;
10. Demonstrated academic excellence, problem-solving ability, technology proficiency, and interest in critically assessing and bringing about improvements to current educational policies and practices as that pertains to social justice and equity; and
11. A personal interview.
