Each spring the Palm Desert Campus hosts an Environmental and Sustainability Expo, which brings together middle and high school students, university researchers, and Coachella Valley's green industry leaders to celebrate and to learn more about environmental science, sustainability, local and global green projects in a way that emphasizes the importance of environmental sustainability for the Coachella Valley. This event features valley school students' award winning science projects on display, demonstrations of recent research on environmental science undertaken by CSUSB faculty, and interactive booths and demonstrations of our green industry partners from Coachella Valley Communities. The events provide opportunities for all participants to interact and consider recent advances in environmental science.

Goals

The Environmental Science Expo has a number of goals tied to the PDC campus mission and strategic plan:

  • Promote knowledge about our environment and its importance to the healthy life and future of our Valley and beyond
  • Promote knowledge about and interest in environmental science research and study
  • Provide middle and high school students an opportunity to display their science projects and win broader recognition for them
  • Encourage middle and high school students to consider careers in science and green industry
  • Encourage university professors and area teachers to incorporate elements of environmental science and sustainability issues in their curricula
  • Encourage Education Professors to incorporate elements of environmental science and sustainability issues into curricula preparing tomorrow's teachers
  • Make the participants and the public more aware of the many innovative projects being undertaken by local green industries
